Sleeps Like A Kitten

Lee Evans

With the dim clouds of the night sky
For a blanket and a pillow,
A few tiny stars sprinkled
Faintly among the bedclothes—

His image sleeps, painted on
The collectible plate on our mantelpiece;
Drifts in the dreaming night sky,
Sleeps like a kitten.

Up, up, and away on tracks
Winding slowly among the galaxies,
Thomas the Tank’s moonlike face
Beaming on him gently—

A man and a woman standing
Below him to say goodbye;
And a stone cat lying
On a mound of earth in their backyard.

With the dim clouds of the night sky
For a blanket and a pillow,
A few tiny stars sprinkled
Faintly among the bedclothes—

The gray kitten sleeps,
Tucked in by the smiling conductor,
As the train pulls out
Of the B & O Railroad Museum.
